Before dinner, while my French fries were cooking, I was googling around to find some new interesting books to read during my limited spare time. I found a very interesting one called I Feel Relatively Neutral About New York, by Monsen Avery and John Jory.
After reading the title, I was like: can you just be neutral, without having any feelings for this place, which is actually my favorite city in the world? Of course I can't, that's why I was curious to see what these guys talk about. I was able to read some free pages from Amazon and I couldn't stop laughing!
"My name is Lady (Statue of) Liberty, and I live on a very small island off a very big island, called Manhattan. Heard of it? I'm pretty famous. Not, like, Angelina Jolie famous, but famous enough [...] . Sometimes it's hard to be a representation of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, especially while keeping my arm in this position. Like many New Yorkers, I am an outsider, originally from France, now living the melting-pot full time and doing my best to thrive and survive".
After the forword of this New York icon, the authors have something to say about everything actually: from the Empire State Building to FAO Schwartz, passing through the Lincoln Center and the Saturday Night Live show. Chapters on Sex and the City, the Apple Store, the shows and the Fashion Week look like so interesting too! And I can't wait to read the two pages about how to use public restrooms, hahahah.
There is also a form that you can fill in if you are disappointed, in order to contact these men and literally insult them in a funny way.
The authors definitely have a great sense of humor, and if we reflect deeply on some facts, we end up with their same conclusion:
"Have you ever loved something, but also totally not loved it at the same time? Obviously, we realize that there are some cool elements to the place, like some statues and stuff, but we also recognize that New York just seems like kind of a hassle".
As a pro-New York person, I just want to say this book looks like FAN-tastic (the pun is pretty clear, I guess). I just ordered it on Amazon, spending just 0.99$. And by the way: I really hate all those stupid I heart New York T-shirts!
I think i will order it too, looks cool and if a ny lover like you likes it, i will aswell:)

This is great! I really want this book now, since I live close to NYC!
RispondiEliminaI have lived in New York for 5 years and I can totally understand that. I use to be in love with every single thing about this city, it was pure magic, but now I find myself forgetting that a lot more. So many people, it takes forever to get anywhere, everythings expensive, that being said there are moments where it all goes away and all I can remember is how much I love this place <3
RispondiEliminaSome books in Amazon are really worth the cost. Imagine paying only below a dollar and you get to see amazing stuff. :)
RispondiEliminahey!! good buy!! i think its a good book too..
RispondiEliminaI still don't get the point of the book! Have to really read it to understand it
RispondiEliminaI love NYC too! Can't wait to be there in 5 days!! Honestly, I didn't get the point of the book, but I had fun while reading it. And yes, Amazon has some great and cheap staff!!
RispondiEliminaI haven't been there but the idea of being there is truly wonderful since I have heard so much about the place - I mean, who doesn't? :D
RispondiEliminaSounds like an interesting read. Will try to check it out. Nice post.
